Consumerism and Sustainabilty

Sustainability is essential in order for our Earth to thrive in the near and long term future. The detrimental impacts of humanity’s actions have taken a toll on the world and we are not preserving our fundamental natural resources. We are instead polluting the environment and wasting the resources we rely on daily. New precautionary procedures and methods must be implemented in order to fix this problem such as radical increases in resource efficiency and focusing more on a solar economy. In today’s society, individuals have an incredible fascination with technological innovations and they crave over the newest item or the next model that is going to come out soon. Consumerism is evident and is also a growing problem in our world. I believe people are more self-gratifying them ever and want to satisfy their own personal needs. While paying attention to their own desires, society is not concerned or even thinking about the influences their consumerism behaviors are causing on planet Earth. Consuming products and disposing of them is clearly seen and this proves to have a negative correlation with sustainability. The more one consumes, the less others have and the less resources our environment can sustain.
Biotechnology must be used to sustain nature and its natural setting and preserve the necessary resources in the world. By changing our motives and applying more bio-tech methods to our everyday lives, sustainability effort will become more efficient and meaningful. Biotechnology will only contribute to more beneficial and conserving ways of protecting our environment. Consumerism in our current generation has taught people the importance of consuming material things because it will make you happy, which has ultimately took individuals awareness away from environmental efforts. Figuring out how nature solves problems with in turn help us find solutions to ways in which we can sustain our environment. Examples such as the new ways to store water and the discovery of natural flowers and animals unique abilities helps society learn new things and provides fundamental and innovative steps toward a brighter, greener future.
My sustainable object that I will discuss is carbon absorbent foam. This foam can grab carbon out of the air and lock it away as a sugar. It is ideally suited to be placed in smokestacks to remove carbon before it is emitted into the atmosphere. This invention will help sustain our environment and preserve the natural resources instead of depleting them and wasting them.
