Money verses
Efficiency
“Global
Warming: Do you believe yet?” is a bumper sticker I bought in middle school,
when I bought it people thought I was crazy because the Global Warming is just
an idea. Years later, while the future of the world is beginning to concern
some, it is still only a concept overlooked by many.
The video
created by Ted was a very idealistic view of ways to fix the overwhelming waste
we are creating. He took ideas from beetles and other things found in nature.
While his ideas were enlightening, they were too idealistic. Most people have
yet to see the need to change their lifestyles in order to create more
efficiency and less waste. While it would be beneficial to create green houses
based off the shell of a beetle, the cost of this was never once mentioned. I
have come to notice the more energy efficient, the higher the cost. In the year
2013 the citizens of the United States are more likely to pay less for
something they are more likely going to have to buy again than purchase a higher
quality more expensive product. This problem is not being discouraged instead
it is actually being encouraged by large companies like Wal-Mart. With this
mindset no strides will be made in preserving our world.
Similarly,
Steffen made a video on ways to make Earth more sustainable and yet again his
ideas are to idealistic. Both men desire to make leaps in the area of
efficiency and waste reduction however, not everyone feels as strongly as they
do. Since not everyone is on the same page these kinds of bounds cannot be made
yet. Small steps and ideas have to be taken and then one day we will be able to
do and create some of the ideas thought of by them. Sadly everyday we dig
deeper into our own waste we have created and see no wrong in it. There are fewer
trees now than ever yet more people in the world. The empathy given for our
planet is none. Both Steffen and Ted are trying to evoke feeling from people
while their ideas may be too unrealistic.
Being
efficient is sadly not a concern to many people in the world in today’s society
even though we are creating more waste than ever. People like Alex Steffen and
Ted are creating new ideas to help make our planet more ecofriendly so that it
hopefully last for the next generations to come.
