In my
research paper, I discussed gun control and the stricter laws that are
attempting to be put in place. My rhetorical object was the movie, The Dark Knight, where the characters of
the movie represent different ideas of gun control. The villain of the movie,
The Joker, represents the criminals in today’s society that commit senseless crimes,
the police department in the movie represents gun laws and regulations as they
are limited in what they can do, and the hero, Batman, represents the ability
of people to defend themselves from criminals. I liked one quote from the movie
in particular, as it said about the morality of men, “Well, because he thought
it was good sport. Because some men aren’t looking for anything logical, like
money. They can’t be bought, bullied, reasoned or negotiated with. Some men
just want to watch the world burn.” This quote was important in my paper
because it really illustrates my argument on how gun laws do not do very much
when it comes to criminals who are set on committing a crime. The only way to
stop these crimes is for the people, or Batman in the movie, to take action. There
is only so much the police and gun laws can do, so the people have to be able
to defend themselves. My paper was a little difficult to write as it is such a
broad and debatable argument. There are not really any points that can clearly
define one side as better or worse. I tried to focus on the newer laws and
regulations that are trying to be put in place, and tell why they would do more
harm than help. I basically tried to say that at this point, guns are always
going to exist in society and that limiting the production of new guns and making
stricter laws as to who can get them might help some, but with all the guns
that are already owned, the laws are only keeping the honest citizens from
purchasing a new form of protection, since criminals do not follow laws and can
find illegal guns anyway. This was my main focus, since there is no way to get
rid of all the guns in society, the next best thing would be for the people to
arm themselves. Honestly, I think my paper lacks a very strong argument and can
be improved with more time and research and picking one point in particular to
focus on.
