The Infamous Writer's Block

Ahh the Infamous Writer’s Block

Writing papers is a dreaded task most people encounter in their life. I was faced with the difficult job of writing a research paper with a length of 2500 words. My paper was based off the show “That 70’s Show”, a show set during the 1970’s. I focused on two main characters, Red Forman and Fez. I found it difficult however to only focus on two characters. The more I began to compare the two the more I felt as if I was being repetitive. My main goal was to focus on the racism found throughout the show. By being set in the 1970s I felt as if the show was a commentary on the racism and attempt to bridge the gap between the different races. However the more I tried to discuss the negatives on racism the more difficult I found it to be. While racism was a main factor throughout the show I also saw how the bridge was being made between the races. While Red was considered racist, he also came to enjoy Fez but my topic was targeting his negative attitude towards different races. One aspect I did find helpful was looking at Red’s upbringing. Red was raised during the Great Depression and fought in Word War II. World War II was a war based off a hatred for one race, the people of Judaism. While Red was born during a time of hatred, does this make his racist views acceptable? This was a question I pondered throughout my paper. Many a times I find myself judging someone by his or her appearance so having to write a paper on how judgment is wrong became a personal question. Why do we judge others by their appearance? I for one know I do not want to be judged by my clothes or the way my hair is cut so why do I turn around and do it to others? Judgment is a leading cause and factor for racism. Red judged Fez simply by his appearance. They say “don’t judge a book by its cover? but is this humanly possible? These questions became a leading factor throughout my paper; they led me to think beyond. Red and Fez’s relationship defined judgment for me. It made me more aware of what we all do, judge. As I wrote my paper I began to reevaluate myself and my opinion of others.
