Chick Flicks Demise

Although I do agree that big changes are coming to social media and that women will have a large impact on them, I think that Joanna Blakely takes the change a little too far.  For the most part the general stereotypes that she talks about are still used today, however that doesn’t mean that our social media is limited.  There are more genres of film than ever today, and new social media websites are created each day.  Even if general stereotypes are given to specific age groups or genders, there will always be a large variety where every type of person’s interested are made possible, even it’s not as well known.  Therefore I don’t believe that making general stereotypes is that bad.  Media companies will never be able to satisfy every type of person, therefore they just generalize with one big group to get a larger audience and make more money.  I also disagree with Joanna’s predicted demise of chick flicks.  Joanna herself might not be a fan of chick flicks, and neither am I, but there will always be women willing to spend their money to go live a dream for two hours or watch a young chiseled hottie sweep some plain girl off her feet.  I feel like Joanna was over estimating on small group of women who like different types of movies, but she forgot about the other people who do like chick flicks, which also include some guys.  Chick Flicks will certainly never stop being produced.  A more likely outcome of large media changes would just be new ideas for movies.  Society is constantly changing and will all the unique tastes of people new types of social media are created, which leads to changes in preferences in people.  Joanna is too overconfident in her ability to predict the people that she claims are stereotyped by media companies.   In addition, I don’t completely disagree with her idea of women taking over social media, but I see it a differently.  Her statistics showing how much women use social media makes sense why more would be hired, but that shouldn’t completely exclude men.  There are many types of social media that would still need opinions of men, such as for violent video games and “bro” movies.  Still Joanna does make some valid points in her argument and it’s hard to predict what will come in the future.  However, even if more women are hired I don’t believe that generalized stereotypes will even stop being used, mainly because of their convenience.
