Ridding us of our Differences? Please No.

Johanna Blakley discusses demographics versus taste in social media.  It is a belief of hers and her team at USC that those who monitor social media cannot decipher demographics.  Instead, taste is monitored more easily.  Due to this, it is harder to figure out if someone is male or female, Indian or Chinese, fourteen or sixty-seven, which leads to Blakley’s theory that social media will be the death to gender.  In support of this, women are now driving social media cites by the frequency of their visits onto social media cites as well as the amount of time they use social media cites.  This leads companies that run social media cites to hire more women because they know what women want.  The hypothesis about this though is that due to women being hired more to work for social media, stereotypical ads will be eliminated.  I agree with the fact that it would be smart of social media companies to hire women because they are the ones that are most frequently using social media, and they are generally more likely to stay connected with friends and family through social media.  Women are more social beings, so they know what they want from a social media cite to keep it more accessible and available.  However, there are differences in men and women.  That is the beauty of the human race.  I realize certain stereotypes are wrong, but companies need to advertise to certain audiences to sell products or ideas.  Whether it is hard to determine a person’s demographics or not on social media cites is beside the point because demographics are still there.  Sure, focus on tastes.  That will sell as well, but do not degenderize our race.  Men have certain qualities, and women have certain qualities, which leads to each having certain tastes.  Certain tastes are going to be more true for one gender than the other, so take advantage of that and advertise with a strong point rather than trying to please everyone.  The point I am getting from this video is that death of genders would be a good thing, and frankly I disagree because we are two distinct beings.  Embrace it.  We have always been a country based on individualism, so why conform by not using genders?  Maybe I am missing the point, but I believe you can still focus on demographics even if they are not as clearly presented as before.
