Women's Role in Social Media: Changing or Staying the Same?

Social media has a large impact on today’s society. This is a change that has occurred over time.  Not until recent years did people spend hours on social media. Since this change has taken place in today’s world, social media has a much larger impact on people.  I agree with Johanna Blakely’s arguments about social media and the impact it has.  In today’s society, social media has become sort of an outlet for people. People now have the capabilities to go online and be exactly who they want to be. A person can change the way they look by going online and finding a new picture that they feel more confident about. People can also connect with other people who have the same views and likes as they do.  This opens up a million doors.  Businesses in today’s society also can benefit from the use of social media. With all of the clicks on the different advertisements, companies can view what people like and dislike. This can help with the companies marketing strategies which will help them boost profits and sales. This also can help companies see what a potential employee is like based on the things said online. If a company is deciding between two potential employees, the company can go online and discover more information about the potential employees. If one of the two people isn’t what the company is looking for, then it is easier for the company to make the decision on whom to hire. The only point I didn’t really agree with Johanna Blakely is the argument about the control women driving the media. Blakely stated that it is a proven fact that more women worldwide use social media more than men. I believe that because of this, women are more likely to have more control on the media that is produced. I believe that companies will see that more women use the media that is produced which will make the companies more willing to hire them. I believe that this change in the driving force of the media will also change the culture. Women will have more of a vital role in what is produced and the views on women will change. Blakely does make a good point about social media being taste communities. Since people post things about what they like and don’t like, it is easier for companies to see what should be produced. I just believe that women will have more of a control on what is produced in the media and this will change the culture. I really enjoyed this video and thought all of the points that were made were sound arguments.
