This weeks
Ted Talks video was presented by Aaron Koblin. He touched upon the diversity of
thought among us. He uses technology to show us that we all have different ways
to do the same simple task. One of his experiments was with drawing sheep. He
offered 2 cents to every person who drew him a sheep. Now these sheep varied immensely,
there were sheep that were small, sheep that were big. There were sheep that
that were stick figures, and sheep that looked like a real sheep. He showed us
that when asked to do a task like this we all have different ways to go about
it. The time in making these sheep varied as well, one person took 45 minutes,
while one person took 4 seconds. Only one person bothered to ask why he was
asked to draw a sheep, shows that no one really cared as long as they got their
two cents. The interesting thing was when Aaron zoomed out of all the pictures
so we could see them together, and how similar they looked. He is proving that
no matter how we all go about doing things, we will arrive at the same
location. Everyone can go about doing
something completely different, but in the end is it really that different? It
is very similar, because they all came to the same conclusion.
Aaron
Koblin also showed an airplane map, which I found to be very interesting. You
could locate the main cities in the country just because to where most of the
planes were flying. I also found the map of Amsterdam with the cell phone
interference to be very cool. They showed that in the center of the city there
was more use of cell phones. On new years there was a very large spike at mid
night. This really makes you think, how many of those calls were called to say
I love you? Aaron Koblin did an excellent job showing the human kind, and how
we’ve changed, without really changing at all.
