Atlantian Courage

The official Atlanta Braves website vitalizes numerous rhetorical strategies. The website strives towards a goal of gaining many fans as well as raising a bit of money to fund the team. It attempts to accomplish this through a variety of visual techniques.

In the top left corner, the headlines for the website are illustrated in broad images to illustrate what is in each article. The image is subtitled with the title of the article as well as a brief summary in smaller font to describe what is contained in the article. The picture alternates to display other articles as well. This transition catches the eye to attract attention giving each article a good chance of being viewed. A downside to this technique is that the articles displayed closer to the end of the sequence could have a slightly smaller chance of being viewed as the other articles would be viewed first. When the page is first opened, there is a small video being played in the top right corner. The video is muted with the option of un-muting the video. The video being played with no sound raises a sense of curiosity in viewers as they wonder what the video is saying. This tempts the viewer to watch the video, giving it particular attention.

At the top of the page, there are options to view the website in alternate languages. Offering information in foreign languages expands the range of audience for the website. It gives a chance for people of different origin to become a fan by receiving the information in their own vernacular.

Dispersed throughout the page are advertisements for products associated with the team, such as attire with the team’s logo displayed on it. This is an intelligent technique as people who are already fanatics of the team would be likely to visit the website. These fanatics would be the people most likely to purchase the merchandise. These fans would also display what they purchased to the public. This display would raise awareness of the team and would attract more fans. The purchases made for the merchandise through the website also aids in funding the team. Providing more money to the team gives the team a way to pay for necessities such as equipment and the costs of travel. Of course, ads for tickets to Braves games are also advertised on the website to be sold to fans as well as anyone that would just enjoy a baseball game.
