What exactly is Victoria's Secret?

It is certainly no secret that Victoria’s Secret has been around dominating the franchise for women’s lingerie and sleepwear for close to 46 years now. When visiting their website you are first overwhelmed with some ad portraying an undeniably beautiful woman scantily clad in racy lingerie or swimwear dependent upon the season. Seeing as we are now embarking upon Valentines Day, the feature image is of a model wearing a red push up bra with matching lace garter and thigh high stockings. Looking at this woman the viewers is obviously supposed to leave with the impression that this is what your significant other or the object of your affection would be hoping to see you in for Valentines Day, so buy this lingerie set. The model in question is relatively a size 2, and with the help of her push up bra her regular B cup now appears to be a D cup. Her perfectly tousled hair and sultry lips give of the understanding that “these are the women that buy our lingerie and not only do they buy it, they look amazing in it and are obviously not going to be without a valentine for Valentines Day this year". The five women beneath her, each selling a different outfit or bathing suit really drive home the message that "this is the look our clothes provide, you may not look like these women in our clothes, but buy them none the less because wouldn’t you want to look like this?" Written next to the model in the daring lingerie get up are the words “ Will you be my Valentine?” The first four words are BOLD and the last ‘Valentine’ is written in cursive. Because the word ‘Valentine’ is written in cursive it softens the bolder font and implies some sense of sensuality and seductiveness that one should certainly have if they were to be looking to purchase, let alone wear some of the pieces sold by Victoria’s Secret. To the left of the model there is a rather large rectangle emphasizing “FREE shipping and Returns with a bra purchase” which at first seems enticing, because who isn’t enticed by a sale?, but then with further navigation of the site proves to be bothersome with the large price tag that accompanies the purchase of said bra. The website subtly and sensually screams buy this product but really means buy this manufactured idea of you…"We know these clothes and undergarments are expensive but Hey, think of it as an investment in this new you, and to help you out we’ll knock a couple dollars off the final purchase price- with the addition of an ADDITIONAL purchase. Gotcha!” Collectively the website is rather effective at doing what it was made to do, sell lingerie. Whether it reaches that by completely objectifying the female body and monopolizing the current idea of beauty isn’t much of a question of at all. Regardless, you can’t help but love Victoria’s Secret. You just can’t.
