This advertisement is showing a picture of a man and a woman
together on a beach hugging one another. They are around the same age, leading
the viewer to believe they are married. The advertisement is for a liquid diet
food company. Its purpose is to show this couple that is still in love and that
they both have dieted to make themselves attractive to one another. It places
them on a beach with low lighting in the background, setting a romantic tone.
Romance is a thing that almost every human being experiences and it is trying
to play off of that to get customers. They want people to look at the
advertisement and think “I want that relationship when I am older”. The company’s
goal is to get people to think that the way to do this is to drink this liquid
diet and get back into the shape that you were in when you went on your
honeymoon. This ideal view will make you look just like this couple and maybe
even be on a romantic beach like they are as well.
The
text is very powerful in this particular advertisement. It is purposely very
bold in its context, challenging every person to think about what their spouse
would say about the shape that they are in. It says “What would he think now”?
This makes every woman stop and think about whether they are satisfied with how
they look and how their spouse views them. They purposely say he because they
are advertising more to women. Women are the main dieters in the US and so that
is where most of the advertising is going to go. This ad perfectly plays into
these general gender characteristics. The reason this ad is perfect for women
is because it shows the romance, which is usually more important for women. It
also mentions about the weight, which women are usually more self-conscious of.
Women struggle more with weight than men, and are usually worried about what
other men or women will think of them. This ad is advertising for them showing
a skinny woman with a man’s love. This is a woman’s dream, to be skinny and
have a wonderful man. This ad does a great job of advertising to the audience
that they are going to be getting most of their business from. The different
elements put into this ad perfectly depict what women want in life.
