The oxford English Dictionary
defines the word globalization as The action,
process, or fact of making global; esp.
(in later use) the process by which businesses or other organizations develop
international influence or start operating on an international scale, widely
considered to be at the expense of national identity. Globalization has been
occurring since the day the earth began to spin, but how has it evolved over
time, and what is it doing to our society in American and other societies in
other countries. Globalization isn’t something that can be accomplished nor be failed;
it isn’t the result of a single person or a single culture. Globalization can’t
ever be completed because cultural norms and other aspects of daily life are
ever changing in every society in the world
So what has accelerated
the process of globalization? Well the answer to that cannot be proven, but it
is obvious as the introduction of social media created a more centralized
culture. News can now be spread throughout the world within in seconds, as
opposed to early in the 1900’s when it could take weeks for people to hear
vital news. It allowed everyone to know the same thing and have the same items.
The media and Internet created the ability for anyone in the world to know any
detail about other parts of the world. The increase in economy also created the
increase in globalization. When companies began going over seas to work and
make different business ventures they would slowly share the culture that they
grew up in. The economy also affected it in other ways, if an economy was
struggling, lets take Japan for instance, and the United States would step in
and help create jobs, by building factories. These factories would benefit both
the US economy as well as the Japanese economy. In the process of building up
the economy the entire Japanese culture has been influenced by American ideas,
they have become in need for each other, thus creating a network. Globalization
occurs faster when countries are in need of the other ones.
This has
effected what the world looks like today. The entire world is like a giant
melting pot; we are all influenced by other opinions and other cultures.
Globalization has killed the individual and caused everyone to become more
similar, it hasn’t allowed anyone to grow on their own, because everyone is in
such need for others.
