Spreading the Word About Violence

This image on CNN shows the violence that has been going on in Honduras for years. Honduras currently holds the world’s worst record, the highest homicide rate. It has been a long battle against violence, but it is finally being brought to light on a national scale. It shows a man in a jail cell holding his hand out trying to get out. The picture setting is dark, showing the gloom of being stuck in a jail cell with no way to get out. The author is also trying to portray the dark situation that Honduras is in with the highest homicide rates in the world. Usually bright colors are meant for happiness and a positive vibe, so this picture is meant to be a somber picture to bring attention to the problems they are going through right now.
The bars that guard the cell symbolize the hard struggle to get out of the violence. Just like it is hard for a man to break out of prison, it is hard for a country to overcome its history of violence and be respected on a world scale. The bars represent how the man can see the outside world, but cannot reach it. Honduras knows that they can eventually improve these statistics and they can see the light, but the bars are currently holding them back from where they want to be. They also show how people are locked inside their houses not wanting to roam the streets because of the constant violence. There are cracks on the side of the wall showing the division in the country right now. When you are trying to fight an issue like this, some people are going to be for the control and some people are going to be against it. This crack shows the division that can possibly tear the country apart.
The man has one hand outside the bar like he wishes he could just go back out to the normal world and not be held against his will. The hand out the bar is just what the country is going through right now. They are trying to reach out to get out of the violence era and become a vibrant country again, but they know right now those bars are holding them back and it is going to be a long journey. Through the dark background and the bars holding the man back, the author is symbolically showing what Honduras is going through right now with their current homicide rates.
