Where is the Morality

Current American culture is unfortunately defined by the icons we hold at such a high regard within the world of media; from models to rappers, we construct social norms based on what this small group of people is doing. The article attached to this photograph pertains to the cultures of hip-hop and rap, and how heavily they influence our daily lives. In this photograph are several items that we often make correlations to these musical genres in our minds, based on both what rappers sing about, as well as their actions. The Marijuana, rolling papers and money allude to the illegal activities that many rappers partake in, but very few are ever reprimanded for. The Iphone, magazines and remote control symbolize the forms of media which Americans are constantly subjected to each day, sometimes by choice, and sometimes involuntarily. Ideas are thrown in our faces every way we turn, either to buy a certain item, look a certain way, or do a certain activity. The pressures surrounding us are what now shape our society, and perhaps the reason American can often be regarded by other countries as an unwholesome nation.
Whether or not we are truly unwholesome as a country is debatable, but the cultural implications of what the music industry has become are extremely evident. Even from the small photographs visible on the magazines above, one is able to guess what is likely featured on these covers. As with any magazine covers, they probably feature scantily clad women posing seductively, a rapper dressed in stereotypical hip-hop attire, or a celebrity committing an immoral act.  The items featured in this photo may seem just strewn about, but the way they appear are presumably how they may be placed on any given rappers coffee table. While this assumption could involve some prejudices, in my opinion the purpose of this visual is to prompt people to consider what they know about the music industry. Instead of putting emphasis on intellect and becoming successful through schooling, often in recent times the defining factor of being accepted by peers is doing quite the opposite. Being intelligent and studious has taken a backseat in the past few years, as a result of a serious onset of the media and Hollywood culture. This is due to the fact that through rap, artists portray drugs and violence in an entirely positive light, causing young adults to be seduced by corrupt temptations. If the reputation and well being of our country are at stake, it would be in our best interest to attempt to mold the rap culture into something more positive. This photograph embodies all that rap and media are nowadays, and leaves the audience to reflect on where we will be in the future if this influential aspect of our culture continues to glamorize crime, sex, objectifying women and drug use.
